Tokyo, Japan Part II ~ Cost of Living

Many people told me cost of living in Japan is high but they never tell me specifically in comparison of where I live. I do heard about the extraordinary pricy property which could cost to an extend where they pay off over 3 generations. So how expensive it is to living in Tokyo?

I made a bit of research on accommodation prior to my trip. Generally the lowest accommodation I could get for private twin occupancy was USD80 per night. Don't be shock, the cost of private twin occupancy of guest house can cost the same as a 2-3 star hotel. The only difference was Hotel charge per room and Hostel charge by  no. of pax, either way, still cost the same. After a bit of deliberation, I chose Hostel because it provides kitchen facilities plus overall amenity like TV, dinning table, more so the hostel carries bit of Jap culture.

.
.

This is where we stayed for 5 days in Tokyo

We put a night in Town Hotel due to early arrival than ETA. Town Hotel located middle of the town of Kaminarimon, yes, the hotel name call TOWN HOTEL literally. It was only 1 hour different from Kuala Lumpur during Autumn. It's  cold and breezy when we stepped out of train station, it was 12am. I finally made it to Japan (exclaim)! Although it was midnight, the cold does awake us a little.

One strict rule in Japan was most smaller time hotel do not allow kid, so if you bring a child make sure you check.  The possibility was kids affect their business if there were misbehave one.

The receptionist in Hotel speak only 5% of English but it's ok for just one night (why? I will explain later). The room was kind of small with bathroom attached, kinnnd of unexpected, oh well.

This is the one person bathroom, you can imagine how big the room will be!!.

Typical single bathroom in Town Hotel, Tokyo

Accommodation

We check-in hostel the second day, Khaosan Tokyo Samurai, it's a three storey guest house, the front view look the same as I saw from Internet. In fact things look the same as per Internet, nothing hidden or beautified (You know some photos were advanced via editing and angle they took to make the space look bigger, then when you check-in you realised you got deceived! right? sound familiar to you? ^^. Well  I find most hotel does but not Khaosan).

There were small reception, small foyer and common computer as we entered, but it was clean and doesn't feel dodgy!! Plus we were welcomed by a strong handsome looking Japanese receptionist! haha well. Guess what he carried my 20kg luggage up to first floor without panting! Bravo (Imagine a receptionist can be so good looking, you can tell how many more in Tokyo, well. Please note, we brought quite a lot of clothes there, 20kg check-in luggage was just nice for both of us spending 6 days in Tokyo). As expected we exceeded check-in luggage upon coming home (you know shopping = =), so you might want to consider extra weight upon purchasing the ticket. Anything purchase in the airport is priceeeeeeey.

Although I've seen how small the room will be from Internet, seeing it with my own eyes was still caused me a bit "deep breath", the room was rather small than the one we stay in Hotel! It's long narrow which practically fits only one double bed and a study table! Other than this, washroom, bathroom and basin are populated in different section outside the room. A typical guest house, but, it was clean ....and new and doesn't smell..at all (I luv it!)

I'm smart for not bring any bigger luggage (mine is 29" luggage, well that's the largest I guess, silly~~), because it layS just nice in the room with bit of space for a person go in and out from the bed. well. My friend told me a studio in Tokyo cost USD 1millions! So you could imagine why the hotel/hostel were so small with the price I pay. Nevertheless, I like the guest house, it's clean plus muscular handsome receptionist haha. well. Nah, most importantly, hostel popular with foreigners, so they speak good English which guide us places to go and you will find really helpful to get a Japanese who can speak english! That's why I encourage to stay in Hostel than Hotel.

Second floor will be the kitchen and dinning area which gives you more room to move around than Hotel, autumn has short day and long night. I like the outdoor dinning area where you could enjoy breeze and cold clean air!

Typically a studio of 500 sqf  cost about USD1million in Tokyo, you can imagine how precious the land in Japan. To break into measurable unit, USD22,600 per sqm or USD 2,260 per sqf. I'm not comparing the cost in town centre like the Golden Triangle here, this is just an average cost!!

Taxi
The hostel also given proper guidance and cost indication on various transportation mode from Airport to Hostel. Bear in mind the cost from Airport to Khaosan Samurai could cost easily USD200! Taxi meter start at USD15 for the first 1 km. So be advised not to take taxi!

Food
Many friends of mine told me how expensive the food here in Japan, well, it's slightly expensive as compared here but it's worth because the portion is big (I do noticed Japanese eat a lot, even a gal!)! So the portion is just nice for me and my daughter. A meal with fried rice, ramen and gyoza cost me around USD9! Cheap right? Ocha is free of charge. If there are more than one adult, some places offer "big" size at the same price, to me it can be shared by 3 persons! Other option is you can consider get some ready made packet food from the nearby supermarket, heat up in the kitchen, the price is relatively reasonable.

This one cost only USD9, for two persons! The Gyoza is reaaaaaaal yummy, some people came here for just the Gyoza!!

She's grinding sesame for her noodle

This one? USD9 for two persons, hmm actually 3. We ordered big size by misperception. It's yummy!

Fresh and yummy sushi! USD1~2 per piece.

  This ready made ramen? USD3

 This one? USD2.5

Vending machine ~ USD1.5. There served hot and cold drinks, this one? is hot.

Transportation

We go by train most of time. remember the train map I shown in my previous post? I spent quite a fair bit in train, BUT if you are smarter (Yeah I didn't realize we can purchase multiple route in a ticket, "Kao Gong"-> Hokkien), you would able to save some money as some route may required bit more in a ticket than purchase the ticket separately. Generally it cost about  USD 1~2 per person per route and usually you need to reach a destination via multiple routes.

Shopping

Shopping is my least priority as they carry mostly autumn/winter apparel. A brandless tote handbag cost min USD100 and same goes to clothing, although it's pricey but it commensurate with the quality. If you don't intend to shop there make sure you bring sufficient clothes. My gal wore three layers of stokin but still feeling cold. Camera is relatively cheap though, I bought a Fujifilm model  cheaper by couple of hundreds.

Assistance for Routing

A helpful friend directed me to this Japan Travel Bureau who offer free routing adivse on cost and train as well as itinerary. So if you are going on free and easy trip, do pay a visit for advise, it's very useful!

Tokyo, Japan Part 1 ~ About Japan

I finally made it to Japan...after so many years! I guess one of the reason was due to too much time spent in grievance and recovery from the failure of marriage (silly~~). Although I've been to many part of the world, Japan is a place I desired for a long time. Today I made it there not only by myself but I brought my precious along to see what her mom wanted to see.

One of the objectives from this trip was to visit a long lost friend of mine who reside in Fukuoka, however it didn't happened due to ignorance of distance and cost ほんとにざんねんでした。I promised her 10 years ago, bad me, I know, ok I hear it. ==..

I always have strong passion towards the language spoken and written characters of Japanese, find them very beautiful and culturistic, the catalyst of study and learn. This trip certainly had open my eyes and deepen my passion for Japan.

I like the blue blue sky ...dust-free, clean and fresh air. Picture taken in Shinjuku (新宿区, Shinjuku-ku, "New Lodge), since it's the main city in Tokyo, I was expecting to see the magnificient high rise office towers all over the place,  however what I see only the lowrise, mostly. Ya, it was due to nature disaster condition, most of the premises are low rise unlike tall and Kuala Lumpur (so silly~~)

Systematic

Japan is a very systematic and organize piece of land, people are very health concious and patriotic. I do remember the admiration and respect they appended towards the King of Japan. I also notice their dedication and devotion keeping their country and environment clean and well. Japan live and led by good culture, one of the subject in my recent study, a positive culture does carries the impact the quality and the performance of an entity. According to Wikepedia, Emperor of Japan is the symbol of the state and unity of people, that explained how Japan could be kept so well orgarnized and robust through out many years - teamwork.

Professional

I admire at their professionallism especially those in the service industry. They are patient, friendly, clean and professional. Their smiles and tone of greetings in their interaction with customer (but I heard from an "insider", Japanese actually dislike how they behave woh, but that's not my business whether they are genuinely smile as long as I don't find them fake.).

Although they speak little international language -english, but  I appreciate their patient in directing me to destinations from the complicated line of trains. With Little Jap and Eng, I managed to travel around Tokyo in my finger tips.  I'm equally impressed how up to date their train map, you won't get lost by following this. This train map is what I carried the whole time!! (grins)

Perhaps I look so confident and expert, there were tourist even ask me for direction! (LOL). It was adventurous and fun to hop-in and out the trains and figure out your route, it's definitely much more fun than you travel with tour agency!

I was greatly impressed to see an airport officer aligned the luggages from conveyer belt for easy retrieval. See the array of luggage which align in same direction? It was pretty shock to see one consideration and dedication to his job.

Cleanliness

Japan is such a clean country (although I only been to Tokyo but in my opinion that represent the whole country), I see no trace of rubbish and stray dog and cats, not to mention rats and cockroaches. I'm serious, no rubbish at all their public places especially train stations, toilet, shopping mall, residential in the absence of rubbish bins (exclaimed).

A friend of mine debated perhaps government enforce cleaning every hour, but another friend proved it wrong. She once told me her friend who lives in Tokyo got approach by his neighbour to see if the rubbish were categorised accordingly (LOL). The driver of the cleanliness lies in the hand of the citizens, people don't have the habit of littering and they even keep an eye of each other to ensure rules were adhere. Yes, all of them. (another exclaims).

Due to the cleanliness they uphold, of course strict enforement of waste management, low emission of carbon monoside, use of electric car and cycling led to fresh air and water. You could drink the water for tap everywhere! (exclaim x 2) but not from this river-lah. FYI, I spent USD1k to get a water filter at home (= =)

Infrastructure

I like how much they upkeep with the infrastructure and pulic area, that made up to new and fresh looking Japan.  Perhaps I was there during Autumn, the air was fresh and clean which contributed to my observation of "Fresh". haha. Well, I would miss the automated hygiene facilities attached to the toilet LOL so much. Most of the toilet in Japan has such facilities if not part of it.

Amenity

The amenity was well considered up to the extend of umbrella. See the arrays of umbrella? To avoid confusion, they are locked and assigned. See the tiny hook in the toilet? There are meant for umbrella (Not that i know Japan rains a lot though). Every little things that counts. I like the amenity in the toilet, there even equipped with handrail for handicap at the basin (exclaimed)!

Security

My friend told me Japan is a safe place to travel, I doubted a little, every foreign places has own crime rate. But that changed my perceptions totally when I see this. Did you see how many bicycles parked without chains and locks within the City down town? The low gate structure potray the level of security in Japan. People even care-less with wallet protruded out of their loose pocket (you know guys who wear those low waist peggy jeans, the back pocket usually drop down to their tighs), I'm sooooooooooo amazed with the extend of integrity in Japan (Grins).

I love Japan and I miss it sooooooooooooo much...Watch out part 2 for Cost and Standard of living in Japan XD

The Dark Knight Rises

The Dark Knight Rises or Dark NIGHT Rises? Lol. I almost got it wrong until I blog about this. Then again, the preset key words in google shown Dark NIGHT Rises when I hit on "Dark", LOL again. Well.

We went to watch this movie on a very odd occasion, it was actually a movie therapy session for a stressful friend of mine.

I'm not a fan of Batman frankly, it didn't seem appealing to me as compared to Superman and Spiderman. Plus the shootings on its premiere at Aurora Colorado does turned me off a little.  Needless to say, I've very little knowledge about this movie or Batman series as a whole. C'mon, it's a boy thing.

So well, we proceed with this because there isn't any other movie meet the time and interest at that point of time. Wait, we tried to avoid it in the first place as it seems a bit intense, anyway, it turn out to be "I'm lucky that I didn't miss this!", this movie is awesome!! I feel a bang on my head and follow with blushing because in my eccentric perception movie industry is dead.

I'm quite picky when come to movie (fine, you can call me Bitch), I pick on scenes, scripts, casts, story (as if I'm a movie director ==), but Not The Dark Knight Rises. I felt so overwhelmed by the entire show, it aroused my emotions like a roller coaster, from thrilling, sobbing, admiring to cheering, I enjoyed every bit of it!

The starring scene was awesome featuring a plane being hijacked. The plane was lifted dangling in the air invertedly, for the first time I saw people enter into plane like sliding into a cone, lol. New tactic, New Awesome! The director, Christopher Nolan carries the adventurous mind.

Did I tell you how much I like about Christian Bale in this role of Bruce Wayne? Oh, a young heir billionaire, philanthropist, cripple but charismatic, a handsome man. Cute when he smiles, masculine when he fights hard, gentlemen in suits, loving-kind when he weeps, heroism when he rises for Gotham City. Great cast and renditions.

The Batman mask suit him best, just I wonder how did he make the time to draw eye liner? LOL. I like this thin lips appear outside of the mask. Sultry and assertive.

Remember how people mock about superhero's cape? I do wonder why the stupid cape is needed other than to complete the elements of Bat (got wings mah). Imagine it get heavier when it's wet, it's long and cumbersome. It get stucked or stumbled on easily. This dawned on me when Batman was fighting against the villain, Bane in the dark, wet underground drain. I was even looking forward to see him stumbled on his own costume (Evil, I know) haha. Anyway, I like Batman.

hhhh..he has Polo Raph Lauren's look!

I seriously quite enjoy the elegant catwalk of Selina Kyle featured by Anne Hathaway. Her super solid-curvy figure wrapped in sleek body-hugging suit complemented her super arrogant catwalk. Her acrobatic- spiderly long legs were showing off the whole time. What a joy!

This Batman story isn't just mundane Heroism, the story in the Ancient Prison was thrilling and inspiring. In the high-wall ancient prison, under the well, prisoner see no day lights other than the airway, the only entrance and exit of prison. Any jailbreaking require to  climb the slippery bricks wall and leap through two far distance platform with bare hand and foot, only those witheld desperation of survival could make to the success. Hundreds of history of prison, only one has made it through.

Bane's mission - Rob the wealth and aid the poor somehow come acrossed my mind. It was a great mission, however on a second thought, we harvest what we sow, the world is fair.

Oh not to forget other casts, I think a few cute guys featured in the movie worth noticing too, see the casts list.

China Women

She didn't aware that I was watching her. I was writting this post whilst watching hr at the same time pondering^^. Well, not exactly writting about her I guess but she triggered into this post.

I was at Cafeteria, KLIA. Right before opening my laptop,  a lady came in with a tray of food. She wore jeans, a bit peggy and white Baby Top with heels, hazel colored hair, fair skin, she looks quite decent. I managed to pick a photo which able to illustrate how she look like^^.

The cafe was crowded, she picked a marble table right in front of me at the centre of the cafe, table populated with 4 round sitting chairs.

She pull the chair slightly outward, put tray on the table and prepare to sit. What caught my attention was she swing one of her leg over the chair with balance of the other leg on the ground.

No, don't get me wrong, women swing her leg over chair can look stylish, but when she is a bit plum, wear something like the grunge with straps Heels! What's more, it's public!

Grunge

I burst a smile when I saw her moves. She look quite decent but her act just now stunned me a little. Experience tell me she comes from China. I'm not depising Chinese women from China and this doesn't implying ALL.
Many a times, they do look attractive with their fair looking skin, however it got dampen from the way they walk, talk or move. Some walk with legs spreaded widely, some talk very loud.

Moving Agricultura Industry to Manufacturer Industry, China developed rapidly in an amazing pace. They literally finding ways to survive, how much more we could expect one who grew up from a poor farming village to look after their postures?

Anyway, China has got a lot of drop dead gorgeous women other than the renown one below.

                                                                             范冰冰

                                                                              巩俐

Standard Chartered KL Marathon 2012

It was my first half Marathon and I appreciate Standard Chartered KL Marathon brought me with good memory.

First and foremost, there were sufficient notifications from payment, confirmation till collection of goodies bag. Cost of this run 58 dollars come with a dry fit New Balance singlet and guide book. The guide book consist of sponsors, event orgarnizer, the route disciplines, parking, starts and finishing timeline. There were also baggage handling service, titan pacers, routes map, timing device etc. It's a comprehensive guide for runners, it was really informative.

I woke up at 5am unwillingly as I finished my drama till 4am =P. Many roads were blocked to facilitate the running track, I was bit panic as I was 15 minutes to the scheduled run time. It was drizzling. Few other cars stucked at first roadblock but I was lucky to talk through the duty policeman to break the roadblock and enter to City Parking. I drove in swiftly, it was quiet and dark. After alighted from my car, I run my way to reach the first volunteer not too far away from the parking spot as I didn't want to risk my life in this circumrances being kidnap etc. I felt a bit relieve the moment I reached the first volunteer, get the direction, I spent 5 minutes running to reach the waiting point - Dataran Merdeka (Merdeka Square).  Thousands of runners aggregated at the starting points eagerly to begin their GO. They were getting excited. The spirit is high and the morale are great.

I spent my time to do a little warm up at the nearby fountain whilst waiting for my friend, she were late. 6am sharp, I heard the gun shot, run has began, everyone wiggle through the pack of crowd to make their space and pace. I'm still waiting patiently. 6.15am, she finally came.

We reached water station at first 4km, plenty of drinking water and isotonic drinks. The next water station filled with banana as an energy supplementary and wet sponges. These definitely a plan from an experienced orgarnizer. Runner drink and thrown the paper cup everywhere, some literally make an effort to dump it at the prepared dustbin (Impressive!), as a matter of courtesy I think everyone should do the same.

There isn't anything special whilst running, it can be kind of plain except you see funny messages on the shirts of runners. Some "Run for Carina", "Run for Diabetes", some wore funny costume with angel wings (This is awesome!). I especially mark color shirt as my pace, I move on to another once I over take them (smart huh!). It was quite fun actually when you reach a certain "target". The run comfort by a "cool zone" with mist diffused from a synthetic tunner, cool facility indeed!

There were distance board at almost every other 1.5km for half and full marathon runner. I love to see these boards as it reminds me that I'm 1 mile ahead, each mile passes like an energy booster to push me run at my greatest strength. I never run out of breath nor too tired as I did at my own pace and enjoy myself. My recovering time was max three days,  and I'm glad that I did 2 months training relentlessly.

The most remarkable scene of my entire run was there were many cheering volunteers station at 1km before the finishing line. Some interesting cheers like "Run faster my hand is tired", "Tired legs are Sexy" and many more.

"What's on my head the moment I reached the finishing line?" I told myself no more running for the next 6 months LOL.

Nevertheless, I felt so proud to have joint the 28,000 participants Marathon.

What's my ranking?

"Your ranking is 778 from a total of 1290 participants in the Honda Half Marathon Women Open category"

"Thank you"

Standard Chartered KL Marathon 2012 ^^

Kechara Soup Kitchen

What's your perception about the homeless? drugs addict? Beggar? Mental illness? Or they are just indolent people. They sleep on the streets, benches, public toilet, mosque/temple, under the bridge. To them, hardcore tiles are their bed, bridge are their roof, carton box are their blanket. That's their home.

Whilst some perceived aiding the homeless is a form of encouragment, I found values in this decent act.

Ever thought who doesn’t wish to live like an ordinary human who has a job, home to live, plentiful meals. They are just unfortunate folks who bounced to bad influence, being abandoned/lost. We hope someday the drugs addicts will back to society to live like human, government able to provision a better shelter to the beggars, and mental illness being taken care of, whilst hoping these will be happening, the least we could do – give provision to their hunger.

Kechara Soup Kitchen enable more findings on the unnoticeable facet – some chose to be homeless. Whilst we live in comfortable shelter, these people just want to save their rental and food for family not once but for more than 10 years. Whilst some old folks abandoned by the own kids to old folks home, they chose to live within their means resentfully. Whilst some left home to get a better job unfortunately being robbed in a foreign country. There are varied races, age, nationality on the streets but all you could find is – dirty and stink.

Do these people have a choice? Yes they do, they could choose to revert to original state living own home but with limited means, they could adhere to their kids to lead a "discipline" life in home care, but these people wish to live a better one by taking a chance in their life. Fortune isn’t strike on everyone. Whilst we hope they would live life better one day, we merely aids them when needed.

Everyone knows hunger suppressed morale, induced depression, aggravated loneliness, by aiding with food, we resolved their least necessity. We show them - HOPE.

..and… This is our values.

Half Marathon

Standard Chartered KL Marathon, I touched the dot at 3:11 (Oh 'kiasu' a bit I started 13 mins after race was started, so technically my finished time is 2:58). Though it never been as good as those veterans which finished at 1: 39,  but I'm happy with my own result. Based on Marathon guideline, I think I meet the Moderate category. If you are Half Marathon Beginer or doing a long run, I hope my post help.

I've been to few short runs like 10/12km in the past and I always amazed with people could do half or full race. "Xiao" (it's Hokkien dialect means Crazy) Right? Their stamina and cardiology must be damn strong to take their body through such a long distance! Whilst your physical able to cope with the distance, psychologically (you noticed I always consider these both ends when coping with challenges), you need to overcome the plain long journey. So I never thought of I would even consider to participate...until one day (Yes-lah, that one day).

So this was my first half-marathon race, I was lack of confidence however I went ahead. You know again the Faith thing brought me through all hurdles for this race. My preparation involve 3 easy steps Research-Feedback-Do it.

Objective

There are plenty training schedule you could find from internet, get a schedule which is achievable. To prepare for half marathon I thought I must be able to do 10km or so and I was quite upset that I couldn't meet the training criteria (Later I found that those training schedule are meant for those who prepare to score at top ten category). So again, determine your objective. To me, I just want to overcome what I always wanted to do (Shrugs).

Benefits
Do you even know why do we stretch our body strength or even putting a test on our mental limits?  It able to increase strength, stoicsm and confidence are areas that reap by Marathon runner. It also teach your body to make use from fat storage in the event glycogen are depleting (good news to women!!).

Training

If you hardly excercise like me, to start off with regular exercise is fairly tough, at time you tend to lapse. I need to juggle time in between time for TT and training, at time I need to comfort her before I proceed for training in gymnasium at my club house. However once the target is set, I will spent my best endeavour without looking back (Scoff).

My training was fairly simple. I did 2-5km run each time on every alternate day. Simple right? You never have to train like  10-15km (non-stop). Hehe. Well. If you're a non-atheletes, run at own pace. Having said that 2-5km non-stop is a tough chore for a person who hardly exercise! Throughout 2 months training, below are my findings:

1. Never wear too many clothes as it might trap the heat in your body resulted slowing down your pace. I don't wear cap, towel or even wrist bands. I wear only sleeveless top and short pants.

2. Stretch first before and after training. Legs stretching is utmost important, it helps to relax your muscles. Relax muscle improved agility thus avoid cramp. i.e. when you need to increase speed.

3. Push yourself as much but not over limit. Back to your objective, do you want to run for fun or to the top. 1km non-stop was quite good as a starter, I later pushed to 4km and that's the max I could do.

After a strenous work out ..

4. Go on a speed you could afford. I begin speed at 5.6 (treadmill) ends at 8.2 (treadmill). Never start off too fast each of your training

5. Breathing is very important. You start panting your heart rate reaches the maximum limit. It didn't take too long to find out that when you've long exhale and short inhale. A regular breathe in and out help to sustain a longer run. So take a deep breath when you're about to out of breath.

6. Do a bit of swimming help to improve your cardiology

7. Remember to stretch before and after exercise longer possible. Stretch means you  feeling real pull at your muscle.

 8. Get a running buddy, that help you with regular execise and keep up with your momentum. Below is my running buddy - Catherine Chong. She went half Marathon after the first time! Incredible woman, single and available (Grins). I also thank her for "teman" me into this crazy race!!

After many rounds of training and the never give up spirit, we made it!! Bravo!!~~

Preparing before Marathon

1. No training a day before the actual run
2. Eat plenty of carbohydrates as reserve for long run
3. Have light food and liquid before running
4. Avoid too much of water or food to avoid visiting toilet
5. Get some tight fitting or with high support running pants if budget is allowed

During the Marathon

1.  During moderate water and carbonated at each station. Remember you need to replenish what you've lost. But I drink mostly water.

2. Sponge up if need to. That will help to reduce the heat.

3. other than that, make use of what you've learnt from your training!! Breathing technique & speed management!!

 Give yourself some fire "Fighting!"

...............................................................and with that, I managed to get a satisfactory position. End of the day, I recover muscle sores within 3 days.
